In May, 2000 Maria and I spent two weeks touring Seattle and Juneau. Juneau is where I grew up and lived for about 20 years. The following is some photos we took along the way. To view the next set of pictures, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the appropriate link.

A view of downtown Juneau, Alaska from the balcony at my father's house. Juneau is nestled between Mt. Juneau, shown on this photo on the left side, and Mt. Roberts, not shown on the right side.

The Mendenhall Glacier, a popular tourist attraction in Juneau, is located about 10 miles from downtown Juneau. It was raining at the time this photo was taken so the mountains to the side were shrouded in clouds.

A second view of the Mendenhall Glacier from the parking lot.

A view of the city of Douglas on Douglas Island from partway up Mt. Roberts. There is a tram leading up to this vista point, although I would highly recommend hiking all the way up the mountain for some really spectacular views. Mt. Jumbo, with the snow-covered peak, is behind Douglas. Mt. Jumbo is one of my favorite mountains to hike in Juneau because of the incredible views.

My wife Maria hiking up the old Dan Moller ski trail. This trail was once used to lead to a small ski resort which no longer exists. The wooden planks cover most of the trail because of the very damp muskeg cover, which is like walking on a sponge. There is still a lot of brown in this picture because the snow just recently melted, but soon all will be a lush green.

Ebner Falls, along the Perseverance Trail. This photo was taken around 8:30 pm, so you can see that the summer days are already growing longer. We saw a black bear and three porcupines during our short hike to Ebner Falls and back.

We took a "Blues Cruise" on a catamaran around the area. The band blew the generator while performing so we didn't hear much music, but the views were fantastic!

Maria and Mishka in front of the Shrine of St. Therese, a beautiful old Catholic church located on a small island about 25 miles away from downtown Juneau.

Another view along the path circling the island at the Shrine of St. Therese. It was raining again this day (after all, Juneau is located in a rainforest), thus the rain spots on the photo.

A view of Mt. Juneau from first meadow on the old Dan Moller ski trail on Douglas Island. The trail eventually leads to the other side of Douglas Island.
