For my 30th birthday, I traveled to Hong Kong and Thailand with brief side trips to Shenzen, China and Macau. Coming from Juneau, Alaska, with a total population of around 28,000, Hong Kong was quite a shock! However, I enjoyed myself immensely. The following are a few photos from my trip.

The Hong Kong skyline at night. I hiked up a hill behind the city to take the picture. Downtown Hong Kong is in the foreground, and the Kowloon District is across the water.

To go back and forth from downtown Hong Kong and the shopping district in Kowloon, most people take the Star Ferry, which costs all of one Hong Kong dollar (about 25 cents U.S. at the time).

Downtown Hong Kong is characterized by elegant, tall buildings and the architecture is outstanding. Kowloon, on the other hand, is the exact opposite — smaller buildings, packed sidewalks and streets, a cacophony of sites and sounds. I loved it!

Another view of the Kowloon District. Great shopping deals can be found everywhere, and they love to barter.

While in Hong Kong, I took a steep ride up to a monastery to see the world's largest outdoor Buddha. For more pictures of the monastery, click on the arrow below.
